Sulphur Mines

On the east side of Milos you will find Paliorema, a bay with clear waters and yellow pebbles that have acquired their color due to sulfur. This is the location of the Sulfur Mines of Victor Melas, the oldest sulfur export business nationwide. Between 1890-1905 the mines belonged to the Public and Municipal Works Company. In 1905 they closed because of the cheap sulfur production in America. Then between 1910 - 1918 they worked occasionally and finally in the early 30's until 1960 they worked full time again. The company closed in 1978.

The beach with the colored pebbles offers a nice view to the old sulfur extraction quarries and the remains of the factory. If you want to explore further, you can also see wagons, old rails, rusty tools and personal belongings of the quarry workers.
